The success of the EXCEL as a high capacity three chamber unit meant that for the first time a self contained composting toilet could be specifically designed for those that had no continuous 110 Volt power supply. The EXCEL N.E. was first introduced in 1981, and has proven itself capable of handling 5-7 people in weekend and vacation use, or 2-3 in residential use. Indeed the EXCEL N.E. long ago established itself as the standard toilet for those living "off the grid".

Using the same large volume Bio-drum, finishing drawer, and evaporating chamber as the EXCEL, the EXCEL N.E. Nevertheless has some unique features.

Firstly, the Bio-drum is insulated to help retain the warmth of the compost.

Secondly, instead of a fan to draw air through the unit, the EXCEL N.E. has a 4" vent (supplied with the unit) which is mounted at the top rear. This acts like the chimney on a woodstove to induce draft, and draw air in through the intake holes, and in from around the toilet seat. For good air movement, the vent should be as close to vertical as possible.

If the EXCEL N.E. is going to be used heavily, or residentially, or is to be installed in a place which is particularly subject to downdraft, a 12 Volt fan(purchased separately) should be installed in the vent stack. This fan draws 1.4 watts, and can be used with a solar panel(purchased separately) and/or 12 volt battery(purchased separately).

The other major difference between the EXCEL and EXCEL N.E. is that because the evaporating capacity on the EXCEL N.E. is variable, a 1" drain is fitted to the rear of the unit, and this should be connected to an approved drain pit or similar facility.
