DO IT YOURSELF INSTALLATION

The self contained "SUN-MAR" composting toilets are extremely easy to install. Even I did it in a couple of hours. for the electric model, all you need to do is drill a 3 inch hole in the wall, run a 2 inch plastic pipe out and up, and plug it in. For those of you that are off the grid it (like everything else) is a little harder, but we like it out here. You will need to run the 4 inch vent straight up and run a drain line.

VENT INSTALLATION

All "SUN-MAR" units include a VENT KIT at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. All units are supplied with a peat mix to start off the compost; an owner's manual (which covers installation, start-up, and ongoing maintenance); and a complete vent kit. Vent kits for electric units include 2" pipe and fittings, roof flashing, (including caulking and nails), 6 ft of insulation, (self contained units only) and a diffusor for mounting on the top of the vent stack. Vent kits for non electric self contained units include 8 ft of 4" pipe and connectors (12 ft for central units), roof flashing and a diffusor. The diffusor is designed to facilitate updraft, avoid freeze up, and largely prevent rain from entering the vent stack EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO INSTALL THE VENT DRAIN

OVER FLOW SECURITY DRAINS
"SUN-MAR" self contained electric toilets are engineered to evaporate all the liquid they receive during normal operation. However, an emergency safety drain is fitted on all units, and this can be connected if the unit is expected to be subject to gross overload or exposed to prolonged power outages. Drain connection is optional on these models.

On all non-electric and central composting units, a 1" hose (8 feet supplied with the unit) must be connected to the overflow drain. A drainpit (or french well ) should be installed in accordance with local regulations. In many areas it is about 1 foot deep and 2 feet in diameter. In places with high levels of clay and rock, the diameter should be wider. A sturdy cover (plastic, tin or wood) and a 6" mound of earth should be placed over the drainpit to prevent soil and surface water from settling into the gravel.

START UP AND USE

"SUN-MAR" units require very little maintenance...To start, add peat mix and 1 quart of rich top soil to the composting drum. Continue to add peat mix at the rate of one cupful per person using the toilet per day. Toilet paper, a good source of carbon, should be added to the toilet as usual. The compost should be mixed and aerated every third day (or at the end of the weekend) while the toilet is in use, simply by turning the drum handle and rotating the Bio-drum through 4-6 complete revolutions. In cottage use, some composted material is usually only extracted into the finishing drawer in the spring. In residential or commercial use, compost may be extracted more frequently.

wintering

Wintering

Composting is a perfectly natural process. Right? Right, but that doesn't make it naturally perfect. Take winter. Because composting declines with temperature, there comes a point where activity stops. So, if a Sun-Mar is to be used through a cold winter, there is really no alternative but to keep it warm. To keep a high capacity electric unit (like the XL) warm in an unheated building:- .Keep the unit plugged in. .Consider installing a fan speed control, so that when the unit is not being used, the amount of air being drawn into the toilet can be reduced. .Completely insulate the vent stack. .When not in use, consider putting a blanket over the toilet. .If water is to be added, use very warm water. The same steps can be taken with a central unit like the WCM except that the inlet pipe and drain should also be insulated. If the unit is outside, then it should be surrounded by an insulated (but not air tight) enclosure and two 100 watt light bulbs installed inside. Non electric models such as the NE and WCM-NE must be kept in a warm place, and all piping insulated, it they are to be used through a cold winter. Finally, if there is no way to keep the compost warm, then all is not lost. Even if the compost is frozen, the ventilation will still work fine, and the toilet can be used as a holding tank for limited winter use. If the toilet is to be used in this way, first make sure there is enough space in the drum, and continue to add peat moss as usual.

"SUN-MAR" has the first self contained composting toilet in the world to be tested and certified by N.S.F. (The National Sanitation Foundation) NSF Listed Excel. -89 Electrical Features are CSA APPROVED LR 55925

Our founder's first composting toilet received a gold medal at the International Inventor's Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland.

We at "SUN-MAR" are proud to be making a major contribution to water quality around the World. "SUN-MAR" units are recycling waste from the heights of the Himalayan Mountains, to the extreme cold of Antarctica, to the heat of the South Pacific. In fact, "SUN-MAR" composting toilets can be found o literally every continent in the World. SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT! RECYCLE BACK TO NATURE!
